The majority of Alexandria's antique attractions are Greco-Roman in origin. Hardly a surprise given that Alexandria's history began with its founder, Alexander the Great. During the Hellenistic period, this Mediterranean port city was a gathering place for scholars for centuries. Large-scale excavations near to the main train station revealed Roman baths, villas and an amphitheatre. Alexandria today is still more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. The Steigenberger Cecil Hotel is an ideal starting point for exploring Alexandria thanks to its central location between the city center and the Mediterranean Sea. Beautiful white sandy beaches also make Alexandria an excellent destination for a beach vacation.
